Sven Gleisner spent a week exploring the gardens and learning from some of the best conservation experts in the world. Hosted by Tom Christian, project officer at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), Sven was able to see the science in action behind conservation efforts at the garden, from overseas seed collection to species documentation and care. Most importantly, he gained valuable insight into why ensuring trees have the best start in life is the best way forward.
RBGE has been using the Air-Pot system since 2007. This revolutionary potting system transforms the way trees grow and develop roots. Rather than forcing the roots of the plant to circle around themselves as they grow, the Air-Pot system encourages growth outwards due to its innovative design. Created from recycled plastic, these reusable sturdy pots have a series of bumps and holes which let oxygen into the soil and promote root growth. The result is a healthy network of fibrous roots that support the development of strong, resilient trees.
Through the conservation work at the RBGE, it is clear that healthy roots are the key to successful planting programs. Cabbagetown ReLEAF is looking forward to continuing its collaboration with the RBGE and Air-Pot to support the reforesting of Toronto.
For trees to thrive they need healthy roots, but standard pots deform roots which seriously compromises the plant. The Air-Pot system does the opposite, actively enhancing the plant, by making it develop a mass of healthy fibrous roots. This maximizes its ability to absorb nutrients and water, leading to a healthier, faster growing tree.
The Air-Pot system is truly unique in its ability to containerize any size of tree including the very large. Sections of Air-Pot wall can be put together in any configuration making it possible to make any size or shape of container. Some nurseries are specializing in using the system to produce large high quality trees. The fantastic dense ball of roots produced by the air pruning makes even the largest trees easy to handle and plant on site.
Nurseries in many countries are reaping the benefits of the Air-Pot system, from the small to the very large. The Air-Pot system is truly unique in its ability to containerize any size.
Horticultural Institutions across the globe have adopted the Air-Pot system for their work in research and conservation. The top botanical experts have embraced the benefits of Air-Pot.
Landscape Designers appreciate the instant establishment and almost 100% success rate of Air-pot grown stock, top landscapers are increasingly specifying Air-Pot use for prestigious developments.
